“신고를 받고 출동했는데 터널이었어요. 터널 내벽에 페인트 칠 하고 있던 분들이 타고 있던 사다리를 차가 친 거예요. 두 분이 작업하고 있었는데 한 분은 완전히 정면으로 치이셨고 다른 한 분은 가까스로 피하셨어요. 많이 다친 분을 살리려고 구급차 안에서 심폐소생술을 하던 중에 이미 늦었다는 걸 알았어요. 그래도 할 수 있는 건 다 해보려고 계속 조치를 취하고 있었죠. 그런데 같이 있던 분이 아무 말도 없이 고개를 푹 숙이고 눈물만 뚝뚝뚝 흘리시더라고요. 보통 안 그러거든요. 저희를 붙잡고 괜찮은거냐, 살 수 있냐 하고 묻는 게 일반적이에요. 나중에 알았지만 두 분은 형제였어요. 지금도 그 고개숙인 모습이 많이 기억에 남아있어요. 가늠도 못 할 마음이어서요.”

“We received a call and headed out to the scene, which was a tunnel. Inside the tunnel, a car had hit the ladder some painters were working from. Two people had been working. One was hit straight on while the other was barely missed. We moved the seriously injured person to the ambulance to try to help them and attempted CPR but discovered that it was already too late. Still, we kept trying everything we possibly could do to save them. During that entire ordeal, the other victim just held his head in his hand without saying a word; he just cried and cried and cried. That doesn’t often happen. Usually people grab us and ask what’s going on or if they’re going to make it. We didn’t find out until later, but the two victims were brothers. Even now I can’t forget his weeping figure. I can’t even begin to fathom what he must have felt like.”
